why fast models beat giant ones for agents

Silicon Valley loves a heavyweight slugfest. For two years, the AI narrative was simple, brute-force capitalism: accumulate tens of thousands of H100 GPUs, incinerate billions of dollars of venture capital on compute, and unveil a monolithic model with more parameters than God.

It was an arms race of vanity metrics. But markets don't reward raw muscle forever; they reward unit economics and velocity.

The real frontier shifted this week. The breakthrough isn’t a trillion-parameter behemoth designed to write mediocre sonnets. It’s ultra-fast, cheap intelligence engineered to run inside autonomous loops.

Anthropic rolled out Claude 3.5 Haiku, matching the benchmark performance of last generation’s flagship models at blistering speeds and a fraction of the cost. Combined with autonomous tool-use frameworks, it exposes where enterprise software is actually headed.

The Brutal Maths of Agentic Loops

Single-prompt chatbots are novelty acts. Waiting four seconds for a consumer bot to summarise an email is acceptable.

Enterprise agents are an entirely different animal. An autonomous agent tasked with real work must draft a query, inspect a database, verify code, self-correct, and call an API. A single user command triggers thirty sequential model calls.

Run the numbers. If each invocation takes three seconds and costs five cents, your single query takes ninety seconds and burns a dollar fifty. Your product is dead on arrival. It is too slow to feel interactive and too expensive to ever scale.

Fast, compact frontier models change the calculus entirely. They transform multi-step reasoning from an artisanal, luxury experiment into an everyday utility. Suddenly, sub-second decision loops can execute dozens of sanity checks in the background before a human ever sees the output.

Velocity Eats Scale

At Green Daisy, we build and prototype autonomous workflows across ventures. The biggest unlock isn't teaching an AI to philosophise; it’s constructing reliable scaffolding around fast, specialised models that execute discrete operational tasks without friction.

The winners of the next technology cycle will not be the tourists throwing nine figures at monolithic clusters. They will be the operators who orchestrate fast, modular models into resilient workflows that quietly solve operational bottlenecks.

Raw scale grabs the headlines and wins the press release. Unit economics and throughput build sustainable businesses.

So what? The question for every chief technology officer is straightforward: are you still burning margin on single-prompt chat toys, or have you begun to optimise for autonomous loops?
