ai for good? or just for good pr?

well, hello there, everyone! sara craighead here, back with another installment of 'sara's take.' today, i've been seeing a lot of buzz around what i'm calling the 'ai for good' phenomenon. seems like every other day there's a new announcement about some tech giant or startup launching an initiative to use AI to solve climate change, end poverty, or cure all diseases.
i'm all for using technology for positive impact, truly. at green daisy, we're constantly exploring how AI can create genuine value for businesses and people. but sometimes, i can't help but wonder if these 'ai for good' headlines are more about good PR than actual, sustainable impact.
the shiny new object effect
it's easy to get swept up in the excitement of a new AI solution promising to fix a massive global problem. the stories are compelling, the visuals are inspiring, and who doesn't want to believe in a brighter future?
but in my experience building AI products, the real work is always in the details. it's about understanding the specific, nuanced problem, getting user buy-in, dealing with messy data, and navigating complex ethical landscapes. a lot of these 'ai for good' programs feel a bit... superficial, still.
beyond the press release
i'm always looking for substance. i want to see the long-term commitment, the clear metrics for success, and how these initiatives are integrating with existing community efforts rather than just parachuting in with a shiny new AI tool. are they truly empowering local communities, or are they just creating a dependence on external tech?
a real 'ai for good' project, to me, is one that’s deeply embedded, sustainable, and designed with the people it serves at the very heart of its development. it's not just about deploying a model; it's about building capacity and creating lasting change.
so, as we see more of these announcements, let's keep a critical eye. let's celebrate genuine innovation, but also ask the tough questions. is this truly 'ai for good,' or is it just 'ai for good PR'? what do you think?
