ai gets a code of conduct – finally!

it’s may 3, 2026, and the biggest news rocking the AI world today truly feels like a moment we've all been waiting for: a global AI code of conduct has finally been ratified by leading nations.

for a long time, Sara Craighead and many others in the AI space have been advocating for clearer guidelines. this isn't about stifling innovation; it's about building trust and ensuring that the incredible power of AI is harnessed responsibly. think of it like the early days of the internet – it was a wild west, but eventually, some norms emerged. this feels like that, but with more intentionality from the get-go.

what's actually happening?

major tech powers and international bodies have agreed on a framework outlining ethical principles, transparency requirements, and accountability measures for AI development and deployment. it's not a strict regulation (yet), but more of a guiding star for companies and governments. it covers things like data privacy, bias mitigation, and human oversight. it's a big step towards a more unified approach to AI governance globally.

why this matters for founders and businesses

for founders, myself included at Green Daisy, this is huge. it gives us a clearer path forward. instead of constantly guessing where the regulatory winds might blow, we now have a foundational document. it means that we can design our AI products with these principles in mind from day one, which ultimately saves time and resources in the long run. it’s about building responsibly, not just rapidly.

for larger enterprises, this code of conduct will likely become the benchmark for their internal policies and compliance. it's proactive risk management, plain and simple. those who embrace these principles early will undoubtedly gain a competitive advantage in terms of public trust and regulatory readiness.

the balance: innovation vs. ethics

there's always a delicate dance between fostering innovation and ensuring ethical safeguards. some might argue this could potentially slow down the pace of AI development. however, I believe the opposite is true. clarity often fuels innovation by creating a more stable and predictable environment. when people trust the technology, they're more likely to adopt it, leading to greater demand and therefore, more innovation.

this code of conduct isn't a silver bullet. there will still be debates, interpretations, and certainly more specific regulations to come. but it's a monumental first step towards a more globally harmonized and responsible AI future. it sets a baseline, and that baseline is essential for sustainable growth.

what do you think? will this code of conduct truly accelerate the ethical development of AI, or will it be another set of guidelines that struggles to keep up with the pace of innovation?
